You've made it through 16 hours. The fast is done. Now comes the part most people get wrong: what you eat first matters more than anything else you do during the fast.
The Worst Way to Break a Fast
A high-carb meal. Orange juice, cereal, toast, a bagel — anything that spikes insulin rapidly after a period of low insulin will cause an outsized response. The higher the spike, the harder the crash. You'll undo hours of metabolic work in one meal.
The Best Way to Break a Fast
Lead with protein. 30-40g of protein at your first meal blunts the insulin response, signals muscle preservation, and keeps you satiated longer. Options:
- 3-4 eggs with avocado
- Greek yogurt (plain, full-fat) with berries
- Chicken or turkey with vegetables
- Salmon with a side salad
Add healthy fats. Fats slow digestion and further moderate the insulin response. Avocado, olive oil, nuts — all ideal for your first meal.
Delay carbs. Not forever — carbohydrates are important. But making them your second or third food of the eating window, rather than your first, significantly improves metabolic outcomes.
Timing Your First Meal
Don't rush it. Many people end their fast and immediately eat — often out of anxiety rather than hunger. Give yourself 10-15 minutes after the fast window ends. Eat mindfully. Your first meal sets the metabolic tone for the rest of the day.
What About Coffee?
Black coffee during the fast is fine and actually beneficial — it enhances fat oxidation and suppresses appetite. But coffee with cream, sugar, or flavored syrups breaks the fast. Keep it black until your eating window opens.
